Bethabara Moravian Church is the oldest congregation of the Moravian Church in the South and the oldest settlement in this part of America dating back to November 17, 1753. At that time the first settlers, a group of fifteen young men, intent upon spreading the Gospel arrived at almost nightfall in a lovely little valley in the heart of the 150 square mile tract of land named Wachovia, which had been purchased previously by the Moravians. "Bethabara" is a Hebrew word meaning "House of Passage"; it was chosen because of Bethabara's role as the initial village prior to the founding of the towns of Bethania and Salem and the settlement of the rest of the Wachovia tract.
We have continued to worship in this valley since that day in the Fall of 1753. Today the Bethabara congregation celebrates over 260 years of service to this valley community and is looking forward to another 260 years of being committed to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. - Source: https://www.bethabara.org/about-us/
